Family Support (Back to top)

We know there are many challenges to raising a child with mental health needs. We also know that families can gain support and learn a great deal from one another.

The Resource Center is starting a new program called Family Navigators which links families of children with mental health needs and provides education and training on relevant topics.  Training sessions cover: building resilient families; effective communication skills; natural supports for families; supports and services in Virginia; self-care; and peer support.

Are you an experienced parent, grandparent or guardian of a child who has received mental health services? If so, please consider joining our new team of family navigators. The Resource Center is actively recruiting participants for its next parent leadership training.

Carol Obrochta, a Richmond resident with over 25 years of experience training and working with families of children with emotional and behavior challenges, will lead the training.

The training is FREE, and stipends to cover childcare and other expenses are available.

For more information, contact the Resource Center at (804) 447-2124 or familynav@mentalhealth4kids.org.

Referral Assistance and Pediatric Consultation (Back to top)

The Resource Center is working with a small group of pediatric primary care providers in the City of Richmond as part of a pilot project to offer referral assistance to families in need of specialty mental health services.

Families who are referred to the Center by a participating physician are screened by Resource Center staff and connected with mental health specialists in the community who can best meet their needs. The program also offers consultation and behavioral health education to pediatricians to increase their capacity to care for their patients with mental health problems.

This service is currently limited to participating pediatric practices.
